SY18-19 Letter from the Principal

August 3, 2018

Dear Ellington Community:

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! I continue to be honored and humbled by the opportunity to lead this amazing institution. Last school year was exciting, challenging, thrilling, enlightening and inspiring. I am so proud of our students and their accomplishments and of our dedicated Arts and Academic staff. We are still excited about being back home at our Georgetown Campus and we are prepared to continue the hard work.

As I remember the loss this year of our founder Peggy Cooper Cafritz and consider the foundation she and co-founder Mike Malone established, I am motivated more than ever to work on behalf of our talented students. The legacy of this school remains strong and we are committed to artistic and academic excellence. We care deeply about our students and we take the Ellington C.R.E.E.D to heart (Commitment, Responsibility, Excellence, Empathy, and Dignity).

This year you can look forward to additional AP classes and a renewed commitment to the Social Emotional Learning of our students. All of our work is anchored in the belief that we must nurture, teach and care about the whole child. We recognize that we are preparing them to be great artists citizens so that they can go forth and effect change in the world.

Please know that we value your input and perspectives as parents and we believe that it truly takes a village to meet the varying needs of our students. By joining with us to support Ellington’s dedicated faculty and staff, you make the delivery of differentiated, rigorous, and relevant instruction possible. As we focus on academic and arts excellence, I encourage you to reach out via the Ellington App, email or phone with your ideas, suggestions and concerns. Our doors are always wide open to you.

As we embrace Year 2 in this new, but somehow familiar place, I ask that you work with us to make Ellington even stronger. Positive change is a choice I challenge you to make!

As a mission-driven leader, I have dedicated myself to the holistic development of our youth. Thank you for entrusting Duke Ellington School of the Arts with the educational advancement of your child. I look forward to working with each of you throughout the coming school year.
