INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 

Audition Procedure

We are auditioning for… Flute, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Sax, Trombone, Trumpet, Double Reed, Tuba, Euphonium, Guitar, Clarinet, French Horn, Oboe only, Piano, Harp, and Percussion. 

 

All auditions are closed to parents/guardians, family members or peers. If you leave during your audition, you may be disqualified. 

 

All students must complete an audition in person. However, virtual accommodations can be made for exceptional circumstances and should be requested for consideration to the Admissions Office.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AUDITION SCHEDULE

ALL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AUDITIONS BEGIN AT 2:35 PM.

 

Which day to sign-up for and attend depends upon the instrument you play and the first letter of your last name. Please refer below to see exactly when to come. If you will be auditioning for two instruments, you may do both on the same day if both instruments are offered that day.

  • Monday, February 7 for last names beginning with A through E

  • Tuesday, February 8 for last names beginning with F through J

  • Wednesday, February 9 for last names beginning with K through P

  • Thursday, February 10 for last names beginning with Q through Z

For French Horn:

  • Monday, February 7 for last names beginning with A through I

  • Wednesday, February 9 for last names beginning with J through P

  • Friday, February 11 for last names beginning with Q through Z

 

For Oboe:

  • Tuesday, February 8 for last names beginning with A through J

  • Thursday, February 10 for last names beginning with K through Z

What We are Looking For

We are primarily evaluating your potential and passion for your instrument, your musicality, and your willingness to work hard to move to the next level. 

How to Prepare for Auditions

For their audition, all students must: 
 

Prepare scales and one musical selection for the audition and have sheet music for the selection, be sure to bring a copy of the sheet to your audition. 


Make sure to have their own musical instrument except for piano. 


Drummers should bring their own drumsticks. 

NOTE: Due to COVID-19, we cannot provide an audition instrument for students. If you do not have an instrument to audition, please contact us at admissions@ellingtonarts.org

The Audition
Process Itself

All students auditioning in instrumental music will be required to: 

 

  • Perform a prepared musical selection, 

  • Perform a sampling of major scales, 

  • Be tested on musical response and sight-reading, and 

In addition to the procedures above, percussion students must present at least one of the following:

Having a Successful Audition

Practice! Truly prepare your musical selection. 


Arrive promptly to your audition with all required materials. 


Present yourself well – dress your best, speak confidently and clearly. 


Be prepared to talk about yourself – your musical background, and your goals for the future.
