Trumpeter/composer Wallace Roney is the recipient of three Grammy Awards. When he entered the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, he had already made his recording debut at age 14, and had attained distinction as a gifted local performer. While at Ellington he studied the trumpet with Langston Fitzgerald, who taught him to strive for excellence in spite of obstacles. Wallace holds the distinction of being the only trumpet player to ever be personally mentored by Miles Davis.
Meshell Ndegeocello is a singer-songwriter, rapper, bassist, and vocalist. Her music incorporates a wide variety of influences, including funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, R&B, rock, and jazz. She has received significant critical acclaim, and has had ten career Grammy Award nominations. She has been credited for having “sparked the neo-soul movement.”
