Summer Intensives

Join Duke Ellington School of the Arts for intensive training in Summer 2023!

Auditions, interviews, and/or fees may be required. Please contact program coordinators for more details.

Instrumental Music
All instruments and levels are welcome, including beginners. We start with second-grade students for strings (guitar, violin, viola, cello, and bass), and fourth-grade students for brass, woodwind, percussion, and piano. Registration fee is free for incoming students.

Dance
For current and/or returning participants who are serious about pursuing a career in dance, this intensive provides unparalleled technical training for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. We boast a distinguished faculty and special guests/choreographers.

Literary Media and Communications
An immersive storytelling workshop that helps youth discover the power of the narrative alongside visual media, written text, and performance art. The workshop will inspire confidence in students’ creative expression. Students will focus on creative writing, film production, theatrical performance, and audience engagement through social media.

Museum Studies
Come and explore the world of art and culture by making your own art and learning to curate it. Experience an interactive tour at a selected museum and visit an artist’s studio. Learn to take compelling photographs and embellish them using Photoshop. As a culminating activity, challenge yourself to produce an exhibition of your very own art. Family and friends will come to view your creative visual expressions. The Museum Studies Summer Intensive is certain to be an adventure to remember.

Technical Design & Production
This one-week intensive is designed as an introductory course to the Technical Design and Production program. Students will receive the fundamentals and basic foundation needed to grow in the area of design and production.

Theatre
Join the two-week theatre intensive where students can immerse themselves in the world of a theatre artist. Students study musical theatre, acting, improvisation, stage combat, playwriting, Hip Hop Theatre, voice, and dance. They visit a professional production, meet professional actors and directors, and create their own play with other students who share the same passion for Theatre.

Visual Arts
This program will inspire students to develop a working knowledge of the elements and principles of Art and Design through the use of multiple media. They will awaken their creativity and further enhance their artistic potential. Lessons will feature Drawing and Painting. On the final day of the Intensive there will be an exhibition of the students’ work in the studio.

Vocal Music
Daily classes will include lessons on vocal techniques, song preparation, and reading/writing music. This summer intensive track is specifically designed for incoming vocal majors at Ellington. In addition, students who are sincerely interested in being a vocalist/performer will benefit from this course of study.
