America’s Promise Alliance Annual Promise Night Gala

Featuring Duke Ellington’s student expression, art and creativity

6:00 PM Reception
7:00 PM Program

On October 24th, America’s Promise Alliance will recognize four individuals who are making systemic level changes in support our nation’s young people with The Promise of America Award at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

Founded at the Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future in 1997, America’s Promise leads the nation’s largest alliance devoted to children and youth. Endorsed by U.S. Presidents and led by General Colin Powell and Mrs. Alma Powell, America’s Promise embodies and carries forward the nation’s collective commitment to creating the conditions under which all children can thrive and pursue their dreams.

A special part of the evening this year will be a tribute to the school’s co-founder Peggy Cooper Cafritz. The school, modelled on New York City’s High School of Performing Arts, was a breakthrough for DC students gifted in dance, painting, music and theatre but ill-suited to traditional schools. It was one of many legacies Peggy left to Washington’s educational, cultural and charitable landscape.
