Bobby McFerrin 2015
The 8th Annual Performance Series of Legends benefit concert took place at the historic Warner Theatre on May 20, 2015. It featured master artist Bobby McFerrin, a multi-faceted and multi-talented artist who has blurred the distinction between pop music and fine art, exploring uncharted vocal territory, inspiring a whole new generation of a cappella singers and the beatbox movement and dazzling audiences all over the world. He singlehandedly redefined the role of the human voice with his a cappella hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. The event was an interactive performance with Ellington’s vocal ensemble the Mellow Tones, under the direction of Mark Meadows, and included performances by Ellington students in Vocal Music, Theatre and Literary Media & Communications. Other featured artists included Ellington graduates Christylez Bacon, a progressive hip-hop artist; Maimouna Youssef, a phenomenal vocalist; sought after tap dancer and choreographer Maud Arnold of Syncopated Ladies; and Dewitt Fleming Jr., acclaimed tap dancer. Bobby McFerrin, Christylez Bacon and Maimouna Youssef also conducted a masterclass with our students discussing music, creativity, current events and how to stay grounded in the industry.
