Lynn Moore

Lynn Moore is currently the Chair of the Social Studies Department at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  Ms. Moore began her teaching career in 1995 at a private elementary and middle school in Washington, D.C. where she taught history and language arts.  During her tenure as an educator, Ms. Moore was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, an opportunity that allowed her to study the “Arabic Novel in Translation” at the University of Pennsylvania during the summer of 1997.  Later, Ms. Moore became a teaching fellow and mentor with the American University’s “Strengthening the Teaching of American History” program in Washington, D.C.  Ms. Moore is also a recipient of the “Global Teacher of the Year” award presented by the World Affairs Council of Washington, D.C.  A keen advocate of global education, Ms. Moore led a group of high school students to Egypt for an intensive study tour of that country in 2006.   Ms. Moore is also among the group of educators that helped to develop the Social Studies standards for the District of Columbia in 2007.  In addition to spearheading the effort to cultivate sustainable partnerships between the Department of Social Studies and various universities, cultural foundations, law firms, and civic/human rights organizations, Ms. Moore lends her expertise to several educational advisory boards and committee.  Prior to her career in education, Ms. Moore worked for non-profit educational, political, and cultural organizations.  She received a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California, and an M.A. in International Relations, with a focus on Africa and the Middle East from the Johns Hopkins University (School of Advanced International Studies), where she also studied Modern Standard Arabic.  Ms. Moore has worked and studied in various countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
